NEW YORK, NY — Viral Food Tours today announced its new Immigrant Stories Food Tour, a walking food tour of Manhattan’s Lower East Side that follows generations of arrivals through the neighborhood that received them. Weekly departures begin Sunday, September 20th and will initially run on Sunday and Monday mornings.
The tour begins at Essex Market on the Lower East Side and ends in Little Italy, in the last blocks of what was once the largest Italian enclave in America. Across roughly two miles and five tastings, guests trace the Jewish pushcart trade that became the city’s bagel and appetizing counters, the Caribbean kitchens built by Dominican families who reshaped the neighborhood in the postwar decades, a Lebanese and Syrian story rooted in the Little Syria that once stood a mile downtown, a Chinatown tea parlor that has fed the neighborhood since the 1920s, and a classic Neapolitan style pizza in Little Italy.
Between tastings, guides tell the story of the Five Points neighborhood, the nineteenth-century district where Irish and German immigrants lived alongside free and newly emancipated Black New Yorkers in the nation’s first true melting pot. While this chapter has no active local restaurants left to visit, this neighborhood’s story can’t be told without it.
The tour is built for tourists and families, with reduced pricing for children.
